Recruitment

Established practitioners

Ely Place Chambers welcomes applications from established practitioners whose areas of practice complement our own. In recent years we have successfully recruited at both silk and junior level and our clerks are experienced at managing the smooth transition of practices.

Chambers has for many years benefitted from established relationships with a number of London’s best known solicitors and some of the Country’s largest regional firms. Our members enjoy strong and rewarding practices supported by our friendly and efficient team of clerks, led by our Senior Clerk, Richard Sheehan.

In June 2015 we moved into newly-renovated, well equipped and elegant Georgian premises in the heart of Legal London that makes us one of closest chambers to the new Rolls Building and provides an excellent location for conferences.

All applications will be treated in the strictest confidence and considered in accordance with our Equality and Diversity Policy. Enquiries can be made to our Head of Chambers, William McCormick QC, Richard Sheehan, or any member of Chambers.

Pupillage

Chambers has a long standing policy of recruiting from its pupils. We look for pupils who have excellent communication skills as well as impressive academic records.

For insight into what it is like to be a pupil at Ely Place Chambers please read Anna Lintner’s account of her own experiences here

Mini Pupillages

Ely Place Chambers welcomes applications for ‘mini pupillages’ (work experience) from students who are considering a career at the bar. We ask that you are already embarked upon a course of further or higher education.

We try to offer you a one-week mini pupillage based at our Chambers in central London. During that week, we will try to ensure you see a mixture of work, both in court or tribunal (usually in the London area) and in conferences with clients. We also give you the opportunity to read and discuss paperwork relating to cases.

We do not offer assessed mini pupillages. That means you will not be tested or examined on what you have seen during the week you spend with us. Should you in due course wish to apply to Ely Place Chambers for a pupillage, we place no weight on whether or not you have completed a mini pupillage with us.

Mini pupils MUST sign our confidentiality agreement and must understand that they cannot discuss confidential details of the cases they see or read about outside Chambers. The barrister(s) you shadow will explain this to you further.

We are a relatively small set of barristers’ chambers, so we may not be able to offer a mini pupillage to everyone who applies because we can only accommodate a certain number of mini pupils. However, we run and implement an equal opportunities mini pupillage policy. We ask anyone who wishes to apply for a mini pupillage to send in their CV and a short covering letter, explaining why they are interested in becoming a barrister and why they have chosen to apply to Ely Place Chambers for a mini pupillage, to Catherine Urquhart, either by email to curquhart@elyplace.com, or by post to Miss Urquhart at Ely Place Chambers, 13 Ely Place, London EC1N 6RY.
