It is with a mixture of pride and regret that Ely Place Chambers announces the forthcoming appointment of Russell Stone as a District Judge. Russell was a founding member of Chambers, having previously been at 10 KBW where both he and Iain Daniels were pupils before moving to Ely Place at the invitation of Ron Thwaites QC in 2000.  Russell has been the Head of the Property Group since its formation and sat on the Management Committee for many years, helping to steer Chambers through its evolution to its present form.  His commitment both to Chambers as a whole and to the individuals within it has been constant. He has been unstinting in his willingness to share his encyclopaedic legal knowledge with others and the path to his door was well-trodden by anyone who practised in the same areas. When Russell was appointed to sit as a Deputy it was universally recognised within Chambers that he would excel and we are delighted that his abilities as a judge have resulted in this appointment, which will also allow him to spend more time with his growing family and less time on Virgin Trains.

The Northern Circuit’s undoubted gain is however, Ely Place Chambers’ loss. We will miss his calm wisdom and generosity of spirit, if not his cricketing “prowess”, and his room-mate of 25 years faces the trauma of acclimatising to a new face opposite. Nonetheless, we celebrate Russell’s appointment and expect him to excel in his new role.
