Legal 500 Rankings

The newly released Legal 500 rankings reflect the continuing progress that Ely Place Chambers is making in its core practice areas.

In addition to maintaining its ranking as a leading set for Defamation and Privacy on the basis of the rankings of Ronald Thwaites QC, William McCormick QC and John Samson, Chambers has added to last year’s recommendations in a number of disciplines.

William McCormick QC is now also recommended as a leading silk in Company and Partnership who is “a tenacious and savvy advocate, who is quick to get to grips with the papers.”

The employment team’s development has resulted in 3 individual rankings: David Mitchell “always provides honest, practical advice, and is excellent with clients”; Jeffrey Bacon (also recommended for professional negligence) “highly intelligent and especially good at weaving together small threads of evidence to create a compelling narrative” and Michael Salter “incredibly easy to work with, amazingly organised and good at building a strong rapport with clients very quickly.”

Iain Daniels is individually ranked in both health and safety “a terrier in court” and for inquest/inquiries.

In property litigation Russell Stone is “very good in front of judges, and is a very clear and practical advocate” and in social housing Sally Blackmore is “always very carefully measured and realistic in her approach.”

Philipp Simon completes the Legal 500 roster being recommended for his work in Luxembourg where he is said to be “strong on strategy and negotiation.”

Beyond those rankings Ely Place Chambers is regarded as “an excellent set” that is “very commercially minded chambers, where members have a refreshingly pragmatic and down-to-earth approach” which “provides answers for solicitors, not problems”.

The clerks “treat every call as important and deal with it efficiently”“They respond to enquiries promptly, are always extremely helpful and make good recommendations of suitable barristers”. They are all “very understanding of instructing parties’ business needs” with, on this occasion Richard Sheehan being singled out as “a second-to-none clerk” who “always goes the extra mile”.
