F offered information technology services to schools and businesses in the local authority’s area. H sent a letter to schools alleging that information F had included in a promotional leaflet was untrue and “an apparent attempt to mislead our colleagues” by using “dubious marketing techniques”. F sued in libel for general and special damage. The local authority agreed to pay F very substantial damages which reflected the completely false and defamatory nature of what it had published and F’s legal costs.
